GENRE: INDIE COMEDY

Since we conceived our film idea it's genre has changed quite extensively. Initially, we wanted to pay homage to Edgar Wright and follow a very conventional comedic route but because of the heartfelt and romantic nature of our film it has become more sentimental. Though we are still using visual comedy, a convention of a typical comedy film, we want to pursue a more 'indie' route by using more emotive dialogue and focusing on the drama.

SHOOT DAY 1: EVALUATION

Though we encountered several problems during the first day of shooting, overall, it was a success. We shot the majority of what we had planned to, and have made appropriate alterations to the shooting schedule to accommodate shots we didn't get to shoot because of time and weather constraints. The actors worked well and had good charisma, although we are going to re-shoot some of the scenes because of slight script discrepancies. The coloured lighting, though very effective, was difficult to shoot and once we started editing the footage we made the decision to re-shoot some shots because we want everything to be the best quality possible. During filming we experimented with different lighting techniques, some more successful than the others, and we will apply this newfound knowledge to the next shoot.

POSTER SHOOT

These were taken during our first day of filming and present several different styles of poster. The images with the white background are more simplistic whereas those with coloured lighting and props suggest the narrative and character dynamics and are therefore more like traditional posters.

We have shortlisted posters 3,6,9 and 11.

DEATH IN BLOOM: FILM THEORY

MAKE UP TEST: FAKE BLOOD

INGREDIANTS:
BLUE FOOD COLOURING
RED FOOD COLOURING
GOLDEN SYRUP

RESULT:
The colour came out very realistic but the mixture was too wet and wouldn't dry. This is ideal for the death scene where the blood needs to look fresh, but for the rest of the trailer it needs to look dried. We brainstormed some solutions and our best option is to use setting spray.

COMEDY RESEARCH

Here I have analysed the levels of comedy created throughout the trailer. The comedy of 'Swiss Army Man' is not concentrated so much on the visual aspect, but rather on the concept of a corpse being able to perform unnatural tasks that no human or creature would be able to do, such as shoot bullets from the mouth and act as a grappling hook and produce fresh water from the stomach. The comedy begins at the start of the trailer, after Hank (Paul Dano) attempts to hang himself. Whilst he is searching for a heartbeat or any sign of life and movement, Danny lets out gas much to Hank's surprise, this paired with the melancholic/ominous non diegetic music suddenly stopping generates this funny moment that perhaps reflects Hank's train of thought, as the panic and concern for this corpse immediately goes away. Despite there being a fair number of points throughout the trailer where the comedic element is utilised, there are still moments where the music changes and the accompanying voiceover also changes tone, and there is a seriousness and almost beauty to the trailer.

  • 39) First rotating shot is not included.
  • 44) Side shot, cut rotating shot
  • 50) Sam: 'she's-'  Mara says 'dead.'
  • 51) Mara continues with 'dead cool, right?' as she is stirring the tea without touching the spoon, Insert Sam looking shocked at the cup, not at her.
  • 55) Shot of Sam laughing along with her.
  • 66) INSERT SHOT
  • 67) INSERT SHOT
  • 70) Instead of the scene in the graveyard, Mara is trying get Sam to shoot her for a joke. She is pushing the rifle into his arms, Sam is refusing, and in the confusion and struggle she pulls the trigger for him (handheld camera, close up shots, fast editing). A mid-close up Sam, barrel is the focal point of the frame, his face is shocked. Long/ birds eye view view shot of Mara lying on the floor a few feet away, supposedly injured (she's playing dead). A mid- close up of Sam as Mara suddenly appears behind his shoulder and says 'nice shot'.
